Catur Muka Bronze Statuette with Four Faces from Indonesia
The title of this bronze statuette by Adi Noviantara of Denpasar, Indonesia combines words from two languages; catur is Sanskrit for ‘four,’ and muka is Indonesian for ‘face.’ Each face in the statuette represents the Indonesian interpretation of God’s four main characteristics–his status as the greatest of all, his role as the king of kings, his tireless and ceaseless work, and the fact that he is the creator of all. The artisan brings the statuette to life by using a distressed technique to make it appear as ancient and persevering as faith itself.
