Help Cancer Researchers Make Life-Changing Breakthroughs
Every dollar donated to our cancer research professorship fund goes directly to supporting the work of dedicated breast cancer researchers. The pioneering men and women whose work we’re funding are truly changing the face of cancer treatment for the better and saving lives.
Dr. SofÃa Merajver, MD, PhD, a professor of international medicine and epidemiology at the University of Michigan, is the current GreaterGood Chair for Breast Cancer Research. She’s an internationally recognized oncologist, as well as a Rogel Scholar and the director of the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Evaluation Program at U of M. Much of her work has centered around understanding and preventing breast cancer metastasis, particularly from a genetic standpoint.
Among other projects, Dr. Merajver and her team use multidisciplinary strategies to combat breast cancer metastases in the brain, which is the most lethal complication of breast cancer disease progression. They take tumors directly from surgery to the lab, where they slice them up, isolate the cancer cells, and analyze them against a database of cancer medications to determine which drugs are most likely to be effective.
Dr. Merajver’s team is one of the few working on brain metastasis projects, and they have the largest collection in the world of brain metastasis samples. They are also the only team on the planet that can currently get this information synthesized within just a few days so that patients can get the right treatment as quickly as possible, since time is of the essence for people with metastatic cancer.
Dr. Merajver and her team have also recently discovered a previously unknown mechanism by which cancer cells are able to pass through the blood-brain barrier into the brain. This new discovery is the first step toward finding a way to prevent and treat this deadly type of metastasis for future breast cancer patients.
We sincerely believe in the work that Dr. Merajver’s team and other cancer researchers are doing, and we care about finding better treatments, preventative methods, and a cure for breast cancer. We hope you will join us in the fight to end cancer by donating today. Every little bit makes a difference! Thank you so much for helping us improve treatments and save lives!
Because these are pass-through donations, it is not possible to provide you a tax receipt with your donation. Save your receipt and consult your tax professional to determine if you’re able to claim this purchase as a tax-deductible donation expense.
