Project Peril: Help Save the Giraffe
Giraffes, the world’s tallest land mammals, are experiencing a devastating population decline. Over the past 30 years, their numbers have dropped by 40%. These tall, yellow speckled creatures are currently listed as vulnerable, but many groups are working to increase this listing to endangered, which would provide them with the additional protection they desperately need. Giraffe habitat across southern and eastern Africa is shrinking rapidly through deforestation, agriculture, and human population growth. Many of the places where giraffes once roamed free are at the center of violence and civil unrest, making these lanky animals unintended targets of war. Additionally, there has been a steady rise in poaching over the past decade, the U.S. imported over 39,000 giraffe parts, the equivalent of over 3,700 giraffes.
Giraffes cannot defend themselves against human expansion and violence, in fact, their form of combat is “necking” (fighting other giraffes with their necks). We must do what we can to save these gentle creatures. Project Peril is committed to working with the best non-profits to secure viable habitat for giraffes, support research, and undertake conservation initiatives at the local and international level.
