Project Peril: Help Save the Penguin
Penguins are in danger. These adorable waddling creatures – a species of bird with flippers instead of wings – are facing immediate threats to their existence because of warming temperatures, melting sea ice, ocean pollution and commercial fishing. In fact, of the 18 different penguin species in the Southern Hemisphere, 60% are listed as threatened.
Two species of penguins, the Emperor penguins and Adelie penguins, live mainly in Antarctica. As sea ice melts, these penguins lose their places to breed and eat. According to a 2021 study, if things don’t change soon, the emperor penguin could become virtually extinct by 2100. Additionally, commercial fishing means many penguins do not have enough to eat and are often caught accidentally in fishing nets. If nothing is done, penguin population will continue to decline at a rapid rate.
