Project Peril: Protecting Species on the Brink of Extinction
Help Protect Vulnerable Species Like the Vaquita from Extinction.
There are perhaps more than 10 million species that exist on Earth, of which only about 1.6 million have been identified. Humans are just one of these species. Yet we are altering the planet and its inhabitants in ways never seen before. The diversity of life is plummeting so rapidly that we are verging on a man-made ‘Sixth Extinction’.
According to World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report 2020, “monitored population sizes of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians have declined an average of 68% between 1970 and 2016.” The report makes clear that we are depleting the Earth’s resources far faster than they can ever be replenished, given the explosive growth of human population and consumption in the last 50 years. Plants and animals that depend on one another for their survival are disappearing rapidly, threatening the entire interconnected web of life that makes Earth so unique. We’re running out of time to save our only home and its many fascinating species—we must do something now.
For example, the vaquita is the rarest sea mammal in existence—with fewer than 10 remaining off the coast of Mexico! This unique porpoise species is endangered due to entanglements in illegal gillnets, used in unlawful fishery practices. But there is hope to save the species!
Project Peril, a program of Greater Good Charities, works with CEDO (Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts & Oceans) to provide trainings that focus on safe fishing practices. We also provide valuable connections and incentives for law-abiding fishermen. This work goes far toward the protection of the vaquita species.
Project Peril partners with the best non-profits devoted to combating habitat loss, stopping the illegal wildlife trade, and preventing human-animal conflict. Project Peril identifies key species on the brink of extinction and helps fund groups doing the best work to save these species around the world. Whether tall like a giraffe or small like a bee, all life deserves a fighting chance.
