Hand crafted by Maribel Posso Olivares of Peru, this statuette of The Cross in the Road is full of color and meaning. The Cross of the Road represents the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion, and is meant to provoke thought and contemplation. The rooster symbolizes Peter’s denial of Jesus. The hand represents the slap that Jesus received before the Sanhedrin (the Supreme Council of the Jews). The spear recalls the wound Jesus receives on his left side. The staircase represents the lowering of the cross after Jesus has died. The acronym INRI stands for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum, ‘Jesus Nazarene King of Jews.’ The red heart symbolizes the heart of Jesus. The red and white flag is the Peruvian flag.
